What are the different types of carbon brushes use din generators and what types of applications are they used in?
Factors of concern include, current density, commutator or
slipring peripheral speed, match brush to commutator/slipring
to obtain minimum wear due to friction and sparking. But,
having wear on brushes which can be replaced, rather than
commutator or sliprings which cannot be easily replaced.
The designer, having experience and specialized advice,
matches brush characteristics to the copper
or bronze used for commutators and sliprings, with current
and speed requirements of the application.
In the real world, replacement brushes for the specific
equipment are used to replace worn brushes. It is
impractical and unwise to risk damage to equipment
by the use of brushes which may physically fit,
be entirely unsuitable electrically.
Not only is the carbon brush of concern, but also
many have flexible copper leads, of specific length with
specific terminations, which any replacement brush must have.
Again only the manufacturer of the equipment,
or a specialist parts replacement company, is likely
to have the correct brush.

what size generator do i need?

I’m looking into buying a propane or natural gas powered generator. I want to run my garage on it full time. I need to be able to power only about 5,000w. About how much am I looking at for the generator, and the cost per month in gas to run it. Just a guesstimation really.. thanks
You would be better off buying a gen set used and you can get them for dealers (propane type) or get a 6500 watt generator at sam club less expensive (gasoline type)
A circular saw 12 amp will use 1440 watts, a drill about 600 watts or so etc.
A few lights and maybe a small motor say a furnace you should be ok.
Propane generators are more expensive to run but a 30 lb tank would last you maybe 8 hrs hours depending on what you are running.(full load)
To fill one depends on where you live, about 15 bucks or so for a 20 lb tank and about 25 bucks to fill a 30 lb tank.
I suggest you do some research and see what you can find on the net.

I was talking with a friends and I know gas in a car or lawnmower etc will go bad after a certain amount of time. Then we got thinking about the massive amounts of diesel fuel in storage at hospitals etc, is there a storage life for it? and is it turned over all the time?
Scott: Since Diesel has a much lower vapor pressure than gasoline(7lbs/PSI) by far it is judged by flash point(under 130F degrees Properly stored(moisture and air is prevented from entering the tank) it can be stored almost indefinitely. These are the contaminates which degrade and evaporate regular gasoline. As gasoline evaporates( little or no problem with diesel at ambient temperatures) it leaves residues which form gums.
In refineries and other business having sources of ignition, diesel is the prefered fuel for running equipment because is far less hazardous than gasoline which has a high vapor pressure and low ignition point, even a spark can set it off.
