Back up generator for home and a/c?

Posted by admin

Answer if you have back up generator for home , and it runs a/c too. how many watts do you have, is it enough? on the 220 plug does the generator have enough to truly start up standard 3 ton unit? i'm looking at getting around 5000 watt for $600. think this would do any good?

It will run your a/c but not any other large appliances, maybe a TV but doubtful. We were in Hurricane Rita and were without power for 2-3 weeks, my 5000 watt ran a well pump by itself and had to disconnect to heat water, but ran a computer two fans and 2 lamps and tv at same time due to low startup wattage. Read the label or owners manual for more info. I did, however install a 15000 watt natural gas generator for a client, and it will run his 4 ton and stove at same time with most of his house on too, and the cost for the unit is only 1500 to 2100 more.

How would I get two ATS systems to switch at the same time, turning on 2 different generators?

Posted by admin

two generators, one utility power, two ATS's. One generator is capable of handeling the house panel it is designed for, I am installing a new power cabinet that willl require its own generator as well as its own ATS. If I ran signal wires between each ATS and connected to the relay contacts, would that send a signal to ATS # 2 and switch to emergency power the same time as ATS # 1?

hmmmm, when the utility power goes off, they should start at the same time, providing that the delay timers on each ATS is set the same way…

generac generator consuming too much oil?

Posted by admin

My 15kW generac generator is consuming too much oil. Checked for leaks but none found. Any idea what the problem could be? Any specific places to check for leaks?

Do a compression check on the engine. If you put oil in the cylinder and the compression rises the rings are worn if it stays the same the valves are worn ,if nothing changes check the crank case assembly for cracks .Also check the seals. Good Luck.

How can we design an emergency cooling water system for an IGCC power plant?

Posted by admin

I want to know how an emergency cooling water system works with other cooling water systems in an IGCC power plant and what are design considerations related to this system.

I suggest you put a message on "Engineering Tips" www.eng-tips you will need to register and go to the engineering area suited to your question. I guess it will be Mechanical

How does electric motors and generators work?

Posted by admin

The short answer is that when you move an electric charge through a magnetic field, it experiences a force.

Therefore, if you rotate a coil of wire through a magnetic field, the electrons in the wire feel a force that pushes them out of the wire (as long as there is a place to go). 'Volts' is the measure of force that they feel. This is what a generator does. For example, falling water spins a turbine attached to a coil - the coil produces electricity.

A motor works the same way, but in reverse. If you pass current through a wire that is in a magnetic field, the wire will experience a force that will cause it (if appropriately mounted) to rotate.

Note that in each case, the force is at right angles to the direction of motion through the field.

If you have a Pacemaker Device installed, how close can you safely be to an electric generator/arc welder?

Posted by admin

My neighbor wants to do some welding with his welder/electric generator, however, he has recently recieved a pace maker/diffibulator for his irregular heart rythyms. He wants to know how far away the leads to the welder need to be from the generator before it will interfere with his pace maker.

generator is not bed arc welder is not to bed but micro weave is very bad

What does a banded woolybear caterpillar eat?

Posted by admin

We found a banded woolybear caterpillar on a fence that was running from birds. We saved it, but don't know what to feed it. HELP!

Banded Woolybear caterpillar, aka Isabella Tiger Moth
Sounds like you may want it to be put in the cold, so that it can make a cocoon.

This site identifies bugs, and you could probably contact them to find out the diet.

Also, I found this info:

"Banded Woollybear Caterpillar: Early October, 2004
A common sight in the late summer and early fall, the banded woollybear caterpillar may be found moving over roads, trails and plant material. Once the cold weather hits, they form a cocoon and wait for spring to emerge as a creamy orange-yellow moth." (1)

Starter keeps running after engine is turned off, briggs stratton riding mower 422707,?

Posted by admin

I took over the repair and replacment of the starter motor for a briggs stratton 422707, but, when I turn off the mower, the starter keeps going. Is there a wire from the ignition that is suppose to connect to the starter as well as the main red cable that is right there?

Guy

The main red cable is the only wire to the starter. I think that you will find that the soleniod is bad and sticking. You can check the ignition switch by putting it in the start position, starter unhooked, and see if you get 12volts when in start and 0 when in run or off. Locate the soleniod and when the starter continues to run, tap the soleniod and see if it stops.

What do I need to know to install a standby generator in Michigan?

Posted by admin

There are many safety issues to be concerned with. While not a job for an amateur, I know of many people who have installed generator transfer panels properly. I've put together a web site directly related to your question. It covers many of the safety issues involved. It should give you enough information to make an informed decision on how to proceed. Visit the web site, do your research, and get in touch if you have any other questions.
