what size cable is needed for 1200 amp, 208 volt, 3 phase, 400 kw?

Posted by admin

standby generator, about 100' from main

First of all, why do you need three phase for your house? Secondly, if you have to ask this you really need to hire a electrician to do this, and finally you need a second mortgage to pay for the wire.

Do you live in the midwest and were you ready for this?

Posted by admin

'Tis deja vu, we have another ice storm like the one in January. Trees down everywhere, electricity out in half the city and surrounding towns don't have any at all. We still have ours but tree branches are cracking and breaking everywhere, whole trees are falling with the weight of the ice, and it just keeps raining and freezing on. A six-inch branch came down out of my lirodendron tree as I was looking out the door a minute ago.
Not an avaliable generator in town, or kerosene or propane heater, and the city is putting its emergency plan in place this afternoon. Is anybody really ready for this kind of thing? What do you do to prepare for it?

What is the worst storm in your memory?
City trucks are out everywhere cutting up trees that have fallen in the streets, and there will be shelters open, and the elec co is working restoring electricity, but it goes out as fast as they can get it fixed. So far we are fine here, and the streets aren't icy. It isn't really cold, just enough to keep the rain freezing on the trees. 30 degrees. But there is tonite, so it could get worse.
ndnquah we had the thunderstorms and freezing rain last night, also. They are forecasting another 1/4- 1/2 in of ice before morning, there won't be a power pole left standing if we do. Hoping they are wrong. We have heaters and plenty of food and water, so we will be OK, but so far we still have electricity. So far 70,000 without power in our area.
Thanks, Der Lange, but if I disappear off the net you will know what happened. We are pretty well prepared, I think we will be OK
got a limb down on the roof, some damage to the back porch but roof is not leaking. Just a mess to clean up and a new roof for the porch. Still raining.

Be prepared.
When my new house was built I had a generator transfer panel installed. It only takes minutes to restore power to the house following an outage. The generator keeps the furnace running, water flowing, plenty of light, and cooking appliances heated. I have enough gasoline for at least one week continuous operation.

We also have a stash of canned food, bottled water, canned juice and pop.
Worst storm in this house was following Hurricane Juan in September 2003. Power was out for three days, but fortunately it wasn't cold and no trees hit my house. Prior to that, an ice storm in the early '80s knocked out power at my parents house for almost a week. We had a wood stove and fireplace for cooking and heat.

Has anyone built power generators built out of materials with dissimilar coefficients of thermal expansion?

Posted by admin

You know, they have various mechanisms that will turn ocean waves into power…I wonder if someone could build a mechanism that changes shape with temperature and does work? Maybe build a spring that gets heated by a parabolic mirror and does high-force, short travel work…or maybe like the spring in a thermostat. You could have hundreds of springs all tied to the same shaft with one-way bearings, and timed like cylinders in an engine so some will always be driving. The cycle is controlled by pointing the mirrors…whole system could be mechanical, until at the end is a gearbox and the generator, and a fridge full of cold beer.

Lots of things are possible.
But, what is often missed in popular articles about technology is that machinery does not come for free. If you are going to commercialize a technology, you have to take account of how much capital investment is required in order to get a certain desired output. I suspect that the kind of thing you are talking about would fail on these grounds - not because it is impossible technically, but because it is impossible economically.

Where can I find a generator that runs on natural gas?

Posted by admin

I’ve been told that you can buy kits to convert regular gasoline fueled generators (like what you’d find in Home Depot or Lowes) to run off of natural gas.

I’d like to find one that already has this kit attached but if I can’t, anyone know where to find these kits and what kind of Pro I should ask to attach it?

I don’t need a whole house generator, just something to run a furnace blower fan or a fridge…

Thanks!

You can try this one. It runs on LP or NG. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to have a generator powering a 2300 sq foot home as opposed to using the local electric company

Posted by admin

I have progress energy here in Raleigh, NC and they charge $0.10 per kilowatt which is outrageous. They are also a monopoly. I no option to switch electric companies. The home is 2300 square feet and is all electric. No gas appliances. Would it be possible to switch to a generator and just buy gas when needed? If so, how long would it be before I notice the savings?

you would have to buy a 60,000 watt generator and the cost would be unacceptable including maintenance and fuel….in order to figure this you multiply the maximum amps of your service 200 times the volts 230 this gives you 46000 watts…you can only use about 75 to 80 percent of the total output of the generator without damaging it…80 percent would be about 52000 watts…not including surges ….you would be better off to stay connected to your power source you have now…

How do I get paid for linking my website to someone elses website?

Posted by admin

My Website is www.masontrenching.com

We are plumbers and installers. Two brand name products we install is Generac and Phill.

Is there anyway to get click-through payments for putting links the Generac and Phill webpage to my webpage?

If so how?

If not is there a list of websites that will pay for click throughs? Thanks!

Look on their websites for affiliate programs. If they have them, you sign up and they give you a coded banner or ad for their site. If someone purchases something thru this link, you get paid.
