How do I de-winterize a 4-cycle 5 HP Briggs & Stratton Engine?
Posted by admin
My friend gave me this engine and it seems to not start and my dad who knows stuff said the engine was left out in the winter. I can pull the cord but it just spins. Yes we have tried the spark plug and I need to de-winterize my engine. the model number is Briggs & Stratton model: 130202. I need serious help because I don’t want to re build the engine.
If it was left out without fuel stabilizer.. then the carb is varnished/gumed up with gas…. take it off, get a rebuild kit and gaskets (carb to engine as well) and tear the carb apart (pics along the way helps a person new to this for reference) and soak it in a BATH type carb cleaner (napa sells it) and blow it out with compressed air and rebuild it and put it on. Btw, drain the old gas and let it dry, might be water in the gastank, gaslines/fuel filter and the carb as well.
Almost forgot, replace the airfilter, don’t try and clean it, if it has a foam prefilter for the paper air filter, don’t oil it!

Put it on a lawn chair out in the sun next to the pool with some sunscreen and a corona.

Probably need to clean the carb- gas left in the Carb turns to Varnish-dump the old gas, change the oil, and use Starter Fluid, it might start- clean or change air filter also.
