Briggs & Stratton small engine repair?
Posted by admin
I just bought a brand new Husqvarna mower with a Briggs & Stratton series 875 engine. On the first day, I hit a stump. The engine abruptly stopped and the blade was badly bent. I installed a new blade, but now I can’t even pull the cord. I tried turning the blade by hand, but it will only go half a turn. The pull cord and engine are is completely locked up - engine won’t rotate and cord is locked up tight.
Is the engine destroyed? What can I do?
the shaft is bent sometimes they can be straightened but not always may need to buy a new engine

i have a briggs & stratton mower and i can put gas in the carb and it will start but will shut off?
Posted by admin
we think its because its not keeping a gas flow. the model # is-10a902 and the type is- 2189 b3 and the code is-00090755.
Simple fix . There is a bowl on the carburetor with a nut on the bottom . Take the nut off . When you do that there is a brass thing right in the center where the nut screws into that you took off. Not the nut itself that has holes on the side . Make sure that its clean too . This is called the jet and it has a small hole in it about the size of a needle , Take something like a needle and poke it into the hole . That will clean it out . Put the bowl back on put fuel back in tank and there you go easy as 1,2,3 . Some times if the motor sits for a long time the gas will dry up and leave a thin hard film in the hole and sometimes you get dirt in the tank and will do the same so make sure your gas is flowing into the bowl . Make sure you drain the gas otherwise it will all come out unless you have a shut off valve and most don,t

Opposed 2 crankshaft engine construction- Briggs & Stratton
Posted by admin
Construction details of my Opposed type engine with 2 pistons and crankshafts based on Briggs & Stratton 3-1/2 hp lawnmower engines model 92502.
This engine required some careful thinking and designing to figure out the simplest method to build it. I went thru about 6 designs on paper before I decided this layout was easiest.
Each cylinder head is 1/4″ aluminum plate, bolted to the block with countersunk head bolts. The 2 heads are then bolted to each other by a ring of bolts that hold the whole assembly together. The intake manifold using just 1 carburator got a bit interesting also. So the engine is now pretty much an overhead valve design, as the valves from one block feed the opposite cylinder, with a small passage connecting the 2 combustion chambers. I messed up in one respect, the chamber volumes are too small, so compression is in the 9 to 10:1 range, which makes starting this monster a REAL chore, especially as it is now 18 cubic inch, or like a 7 hp engine with high compression. It weighs in at about 50 lb.

How do I change the oil in my Bolens MTD 22 Push Mower, Briggs Stratton 500?
Posted by admin
I lost the manual. I’m an ignorant widow. Don’t know where to find the place to add or change the oil in my push mower. It’s a Bolens MTD 22 push mower, side discharge, Briggs Stratton 500 158cc 5.00 Troy Built. It works great and I want to keep it that way. Just need to know where to put the oil.
The drain plug will be either on the front flange of the crankcase just above the mower deck or under the mower deck. It usually has a square head that you can put a wrench on. The fill cap as well can be one of two places on a Briggs. Some have a stand pipe that extends to near the top of the engine and the cap will be marked engine oil. The other type will be down low on the engine block on one side, usually opposite the carburetor, and will have two little prongs sticking up on it so you can turn it to remove. Run the engine long enough to warm the oil, then shut it down, pull the spark plug wire off for safety and drain the oil. Let it drain and drip for about ten minutes, the replace the drain plug. Both fill caps have a dip stick to show you the oil level and depending on the engine you should need fourteen to sixteen ounces of oil to refill. Briggs & Stratton recommends that the oil be changed after every fifty hours of operation.

Vintage Briggs & Stratton 1952 model 6H

1952 Briggs & Stratton model 6H. Developed for rotary type mowers Briggs took the model 6 and turned it on its’ side adding a new oil sump and gear driven oil pump that squirted oil onto the crank and rod. This design made it possible to mount a rotary blade directly to the crank eliminating all the pulleys, belts, sprockets and chains used on reel mowers, greatly reducing the cost of a power mower. Unfortunately the engine block was still made out of cast iron, unlike the reel mowers which were self propelled the rotarys were not so the 40lb engine made the mowers heavy to push. In production 1950-1956 they soon became obsolete with the introduction of the aluminum block model 6BH which weighed about half as much.
