MY HOME SOLAR SETUP in Florida- UPDATE #1

Posted by admin

Introduction to my home solar DIY project. Started with the Harbor Freight solar kit, 800 watt inverter and a normal car battery. Now have added a 2500 watt inverter, a MPPT charge controller and more batteries. Soon I will also have added a solar water pre-heater; I got the info from www.greenpowerscience.com
I will upload that as my next update.

Great Job but there are a few problems with your setup:
As a genral rule of thumb you should avoid useing diffrent types of batteries in one system unless you can constintly moniter there state of charge.
Car batteries are not designed for solar operation as they can not deep cycle (due to there cell structure).
Your batteries are to small fo the size of your inverter as the deep cycle batteries are not desinged to have high curent loads attached as they can be damaged.

nice system, i need a system to run a small TV and 2 o 3 lights, i got all ready 1200 Watts Continuous Power, 2400 Watts Peak Power inventor, and a car battery and a charger control , you thing that it can work?

@MrLagros As I understand it, you can connect different amperage batteries in parallel, as long as you keep the voltage the same. But, different amp/hour batteries will charge at different rates, so you have to monitor the charging a little more closely to prevent overcharging some while you are undercharging others. That is the only problem with connecting different amp/hr batteries to each other in a parallel string.

Even a standard deep cycle won’t cut it long term. The best way to go is 6 volt golf cart batteries. Just connect them in a series of twos of course to get the 12 volts you are looking for.

Nice start… I was wondering on the batteries as well, as I have both 12v and 6v that I was wanting to mix. Keep up the good work!

I have not had any problems with the different amps from different batts. I have a temp sensor that connects to the batts and displays on the charge controller. To date they have not overheated. As long as you don’t overcharge them, they should be safe. I have had mine for just over 3 months.

I see different types of batteries. Any issues with connecting the different batteries of diff amps to one parallel bank?

I ask as I have two different types of UPS Batts. Both 12V diff. amps though some say if you connect them charge them this way may blow up?

  11. mrbuki77 Says:

    Yes, the car …
Yes, the car battery was my 1st batt., however the best to have are 6v deep cycle batteries. I use the car battery to crank up my DC generator, as it has a starter. I do not recommend a regular 12v car battery, they won’t last more than 90 days if ran down past 11 volts. I recommend you call Interstate battery distributor- not store. And ask for “BLEM” or blemished deep cycle 6volt batteries. I just picked up 2 6v batts for $40 each, new with blemished exterior. Awesome deal! Hi from sunny FL.

you bought a car battery i heard you say. I don’t know much about anything but was told that it would be better to have Deep Cycle. Does that really matter much.
    Great set up

Yes, I’m running a couple of items now. I have inside the desk top PC, desk lamp with 15watt bulb, modem, wi-fi router, cell phone charger, flash light charger- these items use about 2.5 amps….then outside I have 5 rope lights in my porch (1.5 amps) and I just added a chest freezer (3 amps). But I have added 2 130watt panels. My panels produce about 14amps for about 5 hrs, and I’m using about 3.5-7 amps 24 hrs a day. So my system is about even, as long as I get my daily sun allowance.

Nice expansion. Are you running anything besides your computer?? I’m planning to install a wind charger that I am restoring from the 1930’s which will give me another 100 watts or so in a good wind. I’ll have to change out the Harbor Freight charge controller also. It doesn’t have a dump load circuit, which I will need for the wind charger.

  16. mrbuki77 Says:

    huge change. the …
huge change. the Rogue 3024 MPPT charge controller is awesome. At peak my solar amps coming from the panels are about 12.5 amps. After the charge controller MPPT settings kick in, the amps are boosted to just over 15 amps. And I just can’t say enough good things about the amount of info the device gives me.

mrbuki77 nice system you have there,i would cut some plywood shelf to place on top of your metal shelf, then put your batteries on them, ill be doing the same with the orange cord for my modem ,phone,pc, very nice setup.

Just to let the world know Ebay has that inverter used for $125 with shipping $144 is what i paid. I dont like to buy used stuff but thought i would give it a try for the price. like the video any pointers with the inverter let me know i have the same panels but not as many batteries. I would liek to know what batteries are good for a hobby solar system. Thanks all

Yes, this crossed my mind. That was why I placed the plywood underneath the batteries. I now have gotten two plastic shelves. I just need to arrange them. But first I need to add more strength to the shelves for weight purposes. Thank you for the advice.

Haha! That’s an awesome idea! That’s kind of how the cell phone towers are in my city: camouflaged as trees. If they can do it, why not you? Good luck with that!

My back yard, and my surrounding neighbors all have 60 ft pine trees. So low would not be the way to go for me. However, I am trying to find someone who will climb up to the top of one of the pine trees in my back yard and cut of the top above the branches. Then I will have them put a VWAT up there for me. I’ll paint it camo, so it will be very low key. I think this might work.
