Kohler Op 33 Bk 1 No 3 Flute Solo
Posted by admin
The 3rd study for flute in The Flutist’s Progress. I’m trying to play it as a fairly fast Waltz. All these studies have delightful melodies. The sound is captured on a Roland R09 digital recorder, and I added reverb to the whole file. My video camera is very lowtech, and the frame rate seems to be slower than the notes. They end together however! Obviously I’ll need to upgrade…

Hi I wait for …
Thanks for watching
Hi I wait for Syrinx of course…
Maybe I sync some Pahud meanwhile…
It was not Rampal for sync, it was Nicolet, he is far better in my opinion, nonetheless I love Rampal too.
The idea “did you see my flute videos” was something which Nina wrote in every comment long ago, but I see it works

I do appreciate your opinion, I hope you note that my responses reflect this. Other people are commenting on our comments (they are welcome to) so I would just ask you to note to whom you are responding. For myself, I will certainly listen to Pahud as you suggest. I have also posted Syrinx today, a piece that I treat with plenty of rubato. Thank you for your interest and sorry to hear you no longer play. I take you at your word as an experienced flutist and look forward to more comments. Andrew

Listen to Pahud …
Listen to Pahud play Bach Partita in Am recording. It is rather unpredictable and very musically interesting. I’m just offering a suggestion so that you can go past just racing thru it. The performance was good, just more could be done is all I’m saying. Try to consider the opinion from an experienced flutist and not take it negatively. I gave you free advice and you can use it or lose it.

Yes, I looked at a whole lot of them under Lietzenmayer and also Ce1mar. There are some wonderful ideas and images, and I really enjoyed the smoking and Rampal sync movie. It was hilarious and quite moving in a way. I hope you enjoy Syrinx which I will post now, at your request.

Oh yes, thant is great!!!
Syrinx is my all time favorite and one of the two pieces I can play by heart (the second is Karg-Ehlert No. 6) - even if not so good, but like reading a book it is okay, not everyone needs to be an actor

Syrinx, certainly. …
Syrinx, certainly. I don’t like Density 21.5. I like a lot of Beatles’ songs, but YS is not a favourite. I hope to do Syrinx for you soon.

Thanks for your …
Thanks for your comment. The tempo and rubato issue is quite valid. I chose not to use too much rubato, since as a study, I found that rubato was becoming a way of avoiding technical difficulties. I am trying to improve and I found it a real challenge to maintain the tempo. I did try to shape phrases within this high speed, but perhaps I failed. If you are made uncomfortable as a listener, I’m sorry! It would be good to hear your version for comparison. Please post it.

Ok performance but …
Ok performance but this is a piece you really have the option of taking more liberties of playing with the tempo to make it more interesting. You just kind of run real fast all through it and then it’s over. Playing more rubato, making it more interesting and not just playing the notes would put a listener on the edge of his chair more. I used to like playing this one years ago.

Greetings from MC, Roland

Hi Roland, very …
Hi Roland, very nice to hear from you. I like all music but have an affinity for expression and melody, leaning strongly towards the Romantic period. For years I barely looked at any other composer but Chopin. But now I’m more eclectic. I like music from Schutz to Shnittke. I often find it harder to find the ‘right’ expression in some modern music. But I might try if you would like to make a suggestion. What would you like to hear from me? Best wishes, Andrew.

Thanks Nina. I hope to record some more of these wonderful little pieces over the coming months. Kohler really knew how to combine study material with lively melody.
