Im hoping so - the PO sed it had a serious knock tho- ill haveta see when it fires up- if it does ill crack it open and fix it - hate to destroy a decent motor.

Man, I wanna hear that Onan 20, allthough I have that evact same 20hp Onan on my welder, lol. They’re great engines.

Sweet! I STILL havent gotten around to firing up my 20HP onan on the GT6000- too much other stuff to do….

  6. golfcarttractor Says:

    Yeah, by no means …
Yeah, by no means would I ever rev it when I have a load on it, I was just attempting to get an reasonable HP estament.

I’ve herd there might be a 12v winding in this generator for an electric start, any idea how I could look inside it to find that winding’s imputs?

    Keep in mind that …
Keep in mind that if you change your rpms your frequency/ hertz may also change as well as the voltage. So be carefull what you plug into it if your gona rev it up. My portable Honda generator is only an 11 hp and it is rated at 5kw 30 amps @ 3600 rpms surge. Steady output is = to (5000w/240v= 20.83 amps). So you see size only has to do with the ratio and # of turns on the generators windings (the back end of the generator). In your case the Onan is so sweet because it is very quiet @ 1800 rpms

Yep, it sure is. It has that huge muffler on it.

    they prolly had it …
they prolly had it wired into the 220 grid so they could backfeed and get both 110 and 220. that’s how we run the garage on a generator.

30 years is the longest old start cold start I have ever heard of. Holly dude, lol start it, crank it, spank it, rev it. LOL HAHA Now thats freaking sad that you did not record you trying to start it, come on man, wheres the camera love? LOL

It seems to be doing well with that heater you speak of, runs pretty dam good for sitting for freaking 30 years, dam! Thanks for sharing!

    Peace :)

My dad has one similar in his Truck Yard, but it needs a Manifold Gasket.

  13. golfcarttractor Says:

    Thanks, this engine …
Thanks, this engine has a vacume (runs off the engines vacume pressure), and a mechanical governer, they both work together to maintain the proper voltage. There’s like 7 different governer adjustments to dial it in perfect, but I’m too scared to mess with those lol.

I’d have to completely agree with that!

    Wow, that thing …
Wow, that thing runs so nice! I didn’t know it was that old! Looks great, too.

I don’t know much about how a generator works - does the engine automatically throttle up when a load (like that heater) is applied, so it can maintain 1800 RPM?

Yep, you’re exactly right. I’d like to wire it to the house, but I really don’t feel like hauling it down to the house. I think I’m going to hook the 220v 5hp air compressor to it, that would be a pretty good load for it.

  22. 123electricman Says:

    Very impresive! You …
Very impresive! You can allways tell the sound of a twin, a clean throaty growl to it. You should connect it to your house and see just how much you can do with it..

Thanks man! I hope it will continue to run well, but we’ll see.

that thing sounds so smooth, even when its under load, that should have no problem cranking out power during a storm.
